DSLR Photography workshop

DSLR Photography

There are 30 buttons and dials on my camera body, five main menus, and 68 main menu items to choose from!

I need to be able to work with these settings to get the picture I want without confusing myself or leaving my camera working unpredictably.

I never want to miss the shot, because my camera isn't set the way I need it.

The DSLR Photography workshop series will make you a better photographer.

You will be practiced in using your camera to capture the drama, emotion, and beauty that made you want to click the shutter on the subject in the first place.

Shoot like a pro

In my opinion there are two types of photographer. The first type points their camera at a subject and a good picture that results is a happy accident. The second type is an artist who understands their medium and uses their camera deliberately and precisely to create art. A large proportion of DSLR owners do not use the full potential of the artistic tool they own. This is like a painter who only uses two colors on their palette. The DSLR Photography workshop series is aimed at photographers of all levels who wish to improve their art by becoming more expert with their camera.

In this workshop series, we will set up our cameras for different types of shooting situation. We will practice getting the shot we want in each of these situations and become expert with our cameras. At the end of the workshop series, you will be using your DSLR like a pro, able to change from one type of shot to another and to predict the results you will create in your camera.

What is covered?

The DSLR photography workshop series covers the following subjects:

  • Introduction to your camera
  • Rules of composition
  • Understanding lenses
  • Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance
  • Camera controls and menus
  • Using your camera in manual mode
  • Using the histogram
  • Fill flash
  • Auto-focus setups
  • Exposure compensation
  • Using manual white balance
  • In-camera effects
  • Creative use of shutter speeds

What you need to attend

Your camera should be a DSLR camera. This means a digital camera in which the subject is viewed through the same lens that the picture is taken with and also allows lenses on the camera to be changed. I recommend a standard lens of 50mm or a zoom lens that captures this range. Please bring your camera's instruction manual to the workshop.

Workshop format

The DSLR Photography workshop series is made up of four two-hour workshops. We will meet in fun locations around San Diego with a range of shooting subjects. Each workshop starts with an explanation of the lesson plan, in which we discuss what we are trying to achieve that day. We will then all work on a number of practical exercises with short breaks for explanation and summaries. At the end of the workshop we will come together to discuss what we have learned. You will receive course notes, including reference materials and extra tips. Between workshops, you will be encouraged to upload your images to a private gallery and share them with the other workshop attendees.

On completion of the workshop series, you will have permanent access to the member galleries and forums of my site and will be encouraged to share your ideas and images with other past attendees.

Cost: $225 limited to 8 attendees.
