What do you buy a photographer for Christmas? The chances of you getting a surprise gift for a photographer are pretty slim, since all things photography-related are either so expensive that they require careful consultation before purchase, or they are so obscure that you have no idea what it is. A friend of mine always wants her family to buy her items of photography equipment, but they balk at buying such strange and expensive objects. Instead, I fear she gets a lot of Christmas sweaters.
A digital photo frame, however, makes a cool photography-related gift that is not too expensive and can be enjoyed by photographers and non-photographers alike.

Environmental Portraits Workshop (0924 - Ports) took place recently at three locations in San Diego. We had four photographers attending, working with two models. This gave each photographer plenty of model time and allowed for a great exchange of ideas.

A few tips for beginners on taking portraits in bright sunshine
In San Diego, where I do my digital photography workshops, the sky is often cloudless and the light is correspondingly hard. It helps to use fill flash in these situations. It's surprising how many people I meet who think flash is just for use indoors in dim light, but using your flash and careful subject positioning will save your pictures on bright sunny days.

I am often asked which camera to purchase by friends and new photographers. It's understandable that you'd want to ask a heavy user what brand they preferred, hoping to maybe cut out days of procrastination and investigation. However, there is no one camera that is suitable for everyone and there are some important points to consider...
