Learning About Lenses and Macro Photography

  • Learning about focal length allows you to select a lens for your purposes.
  • Working with wide-angle and telephoto lets you alter the perspective in your pictures.
  • Knowing about manufacturer’s abbreviations allows you to compare new lenses on offer.
  • Using your macro lens allows you to take stunning close-ups of small objects.

A major advantage of DSLR photography is that you are not limited to the capabilities of a single lens. Each camera manufacturer offers a full stable of lenses covering every shooting situation and photographer’s budget. This flexibility makes your camera an excellent creative tool whether you are shooting eye-popping close-ups, expansive architectural interiors, intense portraits, infinite landscapes, or extreme sports.

If you are new to DSLR photography, there is a good chance that you bought your camera and existing lens together as a kit. Manufacturers offer these kits to get you started by supplying one or two lenses at a discount when purchased together with the camera body. These lenses cover a range that is suitable for general family photography and, while not the best lenses in the manufacturer’s range, deliver acceptable image quality.

As you develop your skills, you may wish to add to the number of lenses in your collection. In this workshop you will learn lens terminology and the proprietary product naming conventions used by popular manufacturers. You will also learn how different lenses perform to give you different looks in your photography.

Subjects include:

  • Understanding lens types
  • Putting focal length into perspective
  • Matching Lenses With Your Sensor
  • Exploring specialist lenses
  • Using optical filters
  • Getting to know lens nomenclature
  • Choosing the right lens for the job
  • Using a macro lens
  • Shooting close-ups
